…és ott domborult a világfa nekem rendelt gyümölcsének mindkét fele. Hogy a tudás fájának gyümölcséből hányféle étel készíthető el, ez már a gondolat és a sötét éjszaka meditációinak volt a feladata. - Kátai Mihály (részlet a Napkapu c. művéből)
...and there was both halves of the fruit of the world tree that had been ordered for me. How many kinds of food could be prepared from the fruit of the tree of knowledge was a matter for the meditations of thought and dark night. - Mihály Kátai
Vajk Kobza, who plays mainly Arabic lute (úd), but also other mallets, has both musical/cultural mainstays of a traditional nature, building his own sound poems by rhyming the so-called old music with oriental contemporary and folk music. Because, however instrumental, every moment, and even the whole of the large-scale musical tableaux, exudes a lyricism, a poeticism, and sometimes a narrative quality typical of oriental tales. This musical journey, devoid of verbality but conveying contoured imagery and imaginatively meditative moods, is clearly not born and shaped by pop music structures, but rather by genuine inner impulses, to then come to life as a new, life-giving force in the listener. The "Secret prayers of the enamel magician" is unique, like the previous Rejtek album, in that the instruments heard here are not heard together anywhere else.
Setting aside Vajk Kobza's main instrument, he plays a lyric instrument of Persian-Greek origin, the kithara, and Munich's Thomas Gundermann accompanies Vajk on two songs on Maori wind instruments (nguru, porotiti, putatara, karanga manu, koauau). They form a close-knit pair, having been actively performing together for a decade and a half.
Kobza Vajk's commentary about the Ep:
The material of "Secret prayers of the enamel magician" is not at all conventional, a 'heavy-musical' journey, so to speak, in a highly meditative, pensive guise. At first glance a short 15-minute Ep, it condenses the spiritual potential of an hour-long album.
With this spiritual journey, Vajk is paying tribute to his good friend, the late J. Mihály György Kátai (1935-2020), a Munkácsy Prize-winning painter, enameller and craftsman, etruscan stientists, and polyhistorian of mythological restoration. The accompanying text includes a quotation from Kátai's work The Sun Gate:
...and there blossomed both halves of the fruit of the world-tree that had been assigned to me. How many different kinds of food could be prepared from the fruit of the tree of knowledge was a matter for the meditations of thought and dark night.
The enamel picture on the cover of the Ep is also the work of Mihály Kátai.
Kobza Vajk is a hungarian oudplayer and multi-instrumentalist. He play early fusion and contemporary oriental music from the Carpathian basin, which is building from the inner path.
